I am really getting excited about making this record with Howard Johnson next week. I am almost ready...ok,
actually still have lots of copying to do.

some interesting talk (finally) on our jazz email group Jazztalk...remind me to post the instructions
here someday for joining (ie..email me if you are interested)

After recent Juno nominations, top ten lists etc., I am really starting to wonder if I should put some
energy into getting Guildwood Records conncected with a Major label. I really dont want to but I
would really like more people to be able to hear my music.

hmmmmm....who to talk to?

It is an exciting time of the year to be a hoser jazz composer...Juno nominees, National Jazz Awards...etc.

My excitement deflated a little tonight when I was in the magazine shop flipping through the new Coda magazine (one of my favourites magazines)

They had all their writers choose their top 10 discs of 2003.

Was it that bad a year in Canada?? I could only find about five records by Canadian artists, total in everyone's lists. (approximately 20 writers, more than half were Canadians)

What is that?

How hard would it be to include a few of the great Canadian discs from last year in each list. Is there no home-team spirit?

I was so angry, I bought a British jazz magazine instead. (twice the price too) They celebrate their own cover to cover. So do Europeans and so do Americans.

I am not suggesting people like them because they are Canadian. It takes a little extra effort to find recordings here and I am suggesting it's worth the effort.

I just saw the Juno nominees and I am highly dissapointed for two reasons 1. Dapp Theory record was not
nominated. okay there are some good records in the nominees but this record is a GREAT record.

www.dapptheory.com

I would call it some strange judgin if youre askin me.

2. way too many artists on major labels for my liking. (if they are not on a major, they are on Justin
Time

I see this as symbolic of the record industry in general. Only the big releases, getting any attention etc.

BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, ......

February blahs.

Wednesday mornings are always kind of special. I really enjoy Mike Hansen's radio show on CKLN. wed 7-11am 88.l FM
He really keeps in touch with the new releases of avant garde jazz and improv and has a good sense
of what is happening around town.

He is also an artist himself. He creates very provocative visual and sound art.

Heh, also here is an interesting post (to me anyways) good blog too!

I am having fun teaching again. I am glad I dont do much of it though. Keeps it kinda fresh. I am trying to
approach it with more of an open mind, learn more myself and try to do things differently than i have for
the past 22 years of teaching. (especially to try to approach each student differently...heh people are unique)

nuff about that...back to writing music....ahhhh....deadlines!!
