Posgate Hornband plays Banjo Hockey at TO Jazz Festival

The Tim Posgate Hornband is doing a CD Release show at Toronto’s coolest jazz club; the Trane Studios on Friday July 3, 2009.

Banjo Hockey on Vancouver’s Black Hen Music is the second CD from the Tim Posgate Hornband featuring Howard Johnson. Since the group added this legendary New York tuba player (Taj Mahal, The Band, Miles Davis) they have surprised and delighted music fans at festivals across Canada, United States, Finland and Sweden.

Instrumental music requires great writing and a high level of musicianship and this band offers up both. The lineup at the Trane and the Banjo Hockey Summer Tour 2009 will be; Lina Allemano on trumpet, Quinsin Nachoff on clarinet/saxophone, Jay Burr on tuba and Tim Posgate on banjo and guitar. (Western Canadian tour begins in Victoria, BC on July 4)

Tim Posgate has made his reputation over the last fifteen years and seven CDs as a guitarist but his recent obsession with the five-string banjo has got music festivals and radio stations excited about his new music. Although Posgate is still a guitar player, the predominant and unusual instrumentation of tuba, banjo, clarinet and trumpet is a big part of what makes this group like no other.

“Tim Posgate’s most recent venture deserves 5 stars from the sheer legitimacy of what he has created. This record is a tasteful and well thought out fusion of 2 North American traditions. The combination of New Orleans Jazz with the driving optimism of Bluegrass makes for a historical listen in a completely modern package. Banjo Hockey is definitely worth the listen!”
